In 1976, A. R. Suleman founded Siku Transport with little more than a truck and a whole lot of ambition. Armed with apprenticeship experience gained from his father’s transportation business, Mr. A. R. Suleman with a 7 ton Bedford truck began his transport business by carrying logs for Imperial Tobacco Group (ITG) and quarry stones for Roberts Construction Company who were building canals at SUCOMA, Nchalo and for the return trips from Nchalo, he carried sugar as a sub-contractor to RMS to various depots of the Import and Export Company in Malawi.
When Press Transport took over the contract from RMS, Mr. Suleman continued to carry and distribute sugar for two years as a sub-contractor to Press Transport. In 1986, equipped with three trucks, Mr. Suleman began an inter-city collection and delivery service between Blantyre and Lilongwe and vice versa. After running this service for a while, he secured a contract with the People’s Trading Centre Limited (PTC) to carry general merchandise and make their sugar deliveries to their various depots countrywide.
With the increasing demand for Siku’s services, Mr. Suleman had to increase the Siku fleet and in 1987 with the financial assistance of the Leasing and Finance Company of Malawi Limited, he started to purchase new trucks which were immediately fully engaged operating the inter-city collection and delivery service which had by now extended to all parts of Malawi. They continued to work for People’s Trading Centre Limited (PTC) as well as rapidly expand their customer base with other numerous parties who regularly required reliable services. The momentum of expansion continued into 1990 and the demand for their services necessitated a further expansion of their fleet. New trucks were purchased from Halls Truck Division (HTD) with the continuing financial assistance from Halls Truck Division, Leasing and Finance Company of Malawi Limited, CBM Financial Services and National Mercantile.
